While waiting for your appointment

In the case of a dental emergency, here are some temporary tips to help relieve your symptoms. These do not replace a consultation with your dentist and are not a diagnosis.

Swelling or suspected abscess

  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water 4 times a day.
  • Apply a cold compress or ice pack to your face.

Food or debris stuck between teeth

  • Gently try to remove it using dental floss.
  • If it doesn’t work, contact us.

Chipped or broken tooth

  • Gently clean the affected area.
  • Avoid chewing on the affected side.
  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene.
  • Avoid very hot, cold, or sugary foods.

Knocked-out tooth (avulsion)
A knocked-out tooth can sometimes be saved if reinserted quickly:

  • Hold the tooth by the crown (top), avoiding contact with the root.
  • If dirty, gently rinse it with saline solution (not tap water).
  • Try to place it back in its socket.
    • If successful, gently bite on a moist cloth.
    • If not, keep it between your cheek and teeth until you arrive.

Tongue or lip bite

  • Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth for about 10 minutes.
  • If swollen, use a cold compress.
  • Contact us if the bleeding doesn’t stop.

Bleeding gums

  • Gently brush with an ultra-soft toothbrush and mild toothpaste.
  • Good oral hygiene is essential to reduce inflammation.
  • If bleeding persists, contact us promptly.

These tips do not constitute a diagnosis. They do not replace the advice of your dentist.
